On March 19, 2021, the official groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of a “mammoth project”: the new Fürth Hospital. Two basement floors, a ground floor, and four upper floors were built on a floor space of 4,500 square meters. The construction work required moving around 50,000 cubic meters of earth and then installing 15,000 cubic meters of concrete. A central element of this project was the column formwork, which was necessary for the safe and efficient construction of the numerous concrete columns.
At the outset, the Josef Rädlinger Group from Cham in the Bavarian Forest opted for a solution from a competitor. However, disillusionment set in as soon as the initial installation was complete: assembling the original column formwork took too long, the processes were too complex, and the schedule was under pressure. Since time equals money in the construction industry, site manager Christopher Heimerl and his team decided to switch systems—to PAX HD column formwork from Mayer Schaltechnik.
The change proved to be a great success. Even during assembly, the positive experiences that foreman Simon Baumann had already had with previous projects were confirmed: “The PAX HD from Mayer Schaltechnik stands out thanks to its simple assembly process and effortless implementation. These experiences were seamlessly confirmed in Fürth. It was a necessary and successful change towards efficiency.”
Five supports with heights of 3.20 meters plus 70 centimeters were initially rented for the Fürth Clinic. Thanks to the rapid assembly and uncomplicated relocation, ten additional supports with a height of 2.70 meters plus extension were added as the project progressed. This resulted in around 40 supports with a height of 3.80 meters and 74 supports with a height of 2.90 meters per floor being erected in record time.
The high fresh concrete pressure absorption and the associated stability of the PAX HD paid off over the entire construction period of two years. The quality was so impressive that Rädlinger decided to add the formwork system to its own inventory after the project was completed.
No sooner had Fürth Hospital been completed than the next major project was waiting for the Rädlinger team: the new construction of the Children’s Hospital in Nuremberg. After a brief pit stop for preparation at Mayer Schaltechnik’s home base in Bergrheinfeld, or more precisely, at our in-house MSP service program, the agile PAX HD column formwork was put back into action right away.
There, it is supporting the construction with a total of 120 columns in the third basement level, a planned technical room, and 75 columns per floor in the five floors above. Here, too, it is clear that even large-scale projects can be completed in record time and with the highest quality using PAX HD.
