The Levensau Viaduct near Kiel is not only an important structure, but also a true landmark on the Kiel Canal. It has spanned the waterway for over 130 years, providing an important transport link. But time has left its mark: extensive modernization work is needed to make the bridge fit for the future. The Waterways Construction Authority in Kiel is responsible for the project, while the internationally active company BEMO Tunnelling from Innsbruck is carrying out the construction work.
The renovation work on the so-called “red landmark” requires the utmost precision and special solutions. As part of the work to construct a scaffolding tower foundation, 31.7-meter-long bored piles with a diameter of 1.5 meters are being installed. These will later form the foundation for the scaffolding for the new bridge arch. Due to the enormous dimensions and geological conditions, a powerful large drilling rig is being used. However, the space around the construction site is extremely limited, posing a particular challenge for site managers and foremen. In their search for a safe, flexible, and efficient solution, the project team came across our sigeMAX concrete platform.
At Mayer Schaltechnik in Bergrheinfeld, Bavaria, we have been specializing for decades in the development of practical systems that simplify and accelerate construction processes. With the sigeMAX concreting platform, those responsible opted for an ultra-lightweight system that impresses with its flexibility and user-friendliness. The platform can be used universally, for example, on any standard frame formwork as well as hollow and double walls.
The potential of the sigeMAX platform system quickly became apparent at the Levensauer Bridge. Thanks to the well-designed suspension heads, which do not require any loose parts, several sigeMAX platforms could be assembled in a very short time and suspended from the existing angle support walls. This meant that no additional drilling was necessary – a major advantage that saved both time and money. At the same time, the working levels were optimized and comfort for the construction site personnel was significantly increased.
In addition to speed, occupational safety plays a decisive role in the sigeMAX concreting platform. According to the employees on the construction site, the robust construction gives them a “feeling of safety” when working at lofty heights.
It wasn’t just the technology that impressed, but also the service: site manager Fabian Goßmann from BEMO Tunnelling particularly highlights our competent advice. Our team developed a customized solution for the specific requirements in Kiel using the sigeMAX. The close cooperation was a decisive factor in the successful deployment of the concreting platform.
By 2027 at the latest, the historic Levensauer Bridge on Eckernförder Straße will shine in new splendor. It will then once again ensure a safe crossing for the Kiel Canal on the north bank of Kiel.
